About Our Organization The Association of the Friends of the James Norman Hall Home
(Les Amis de la Maison de James Norman Hall)
Association Culturelle Loi de 1901, a Non-Profit OrganizationThe Association was created 10 years ago, based on the dream of a young woman and her husband to honor her father's memory. It was one of the rites of passagein Nick and Nancy Hall Rutgers' life long project to restore and open to the public the home of James Norman Hall, Nancy's famous father and her mother Sarah Teraireia Winchester Hall.
Their passion was communicated early on to the next generation. Grandson Jamie Rutgers poured 17 years of effort into convincing the territorial government which owns the site and buildings to restore the house to itsprevious pristine state. Jamie lovingly maintained Papa Hall's and Mama Lala's personal effects which were to return to their original place. He patiently collected a library of old editions of James Norman Hall publications.
After 18 years of perseverance and 7 cultural ministers later, the house was fastidiously rebuilt by the government down to the last detail, and the garden restored to its previous glory. The Hall library of over 3,000 volumes and the Halls' personal effects, on loan by the family, were returned to their rightful place. The house is managed by the Association of the Friends of the James Norman Hall Home, which reportsregularly to both the territorial government, as well as to the Hall descendents. The Association has a 6-member board, currently presided over by James Norman Hall Rutgers and 60 local members. It is closely tied to the American "Nicholas G. and Nancy Hall Rutgers Foundation, Inc." createdin 1997 by Nicholas Rutgers, composed of American friends, who so graciously donate the funds necessary to keep the house open and maintained.
